This week on A Sound Effect, we have lots of highly detailed libraries from the sound designers we’ve all come to love. You can hear sandy, rattling winds in West Texas, a collection of smartly produced AI commands and phrases, intricately designed mechanisms, and strange ambiences and creatures from an imaginative mind. You can also hear authentic WWII aircraft, immersive ambience from a Buddhist nunnery, glitchy screams, character-based footsteps, and all the elements you need for your convivial adventure game. Happy listening!
'High Desert Winds 2' by Thomas Rex Beverly is the much-awaited new volume of his clean, interesting wind recordings. With 59 recordings, you'll hear pure 20-75 mph winds in West Texas and everything they shake in their paths: this includes creaking, groaning windows, doors, and walls in a house, as well as winds that spray sand, float across the grass, and tear apart tarps and umbrellas. If this is your first introduction to Thomas Rex Beverly's libraries, you're in for a treat!
'Artificial Intelligence' is a joint venture between SoundBits and Monte Sound to bring you a very useful and flexible sound library that will give voices to your robots, AI, and user interfaces. With 2,800 words, 6 character voices, and 112 phrases like 'Security breach detected. Please proceed with protocol', you'll have lots of sci-fi scenarios covered with endless word combinations. And with the metadata, retrieving a sound will be as easy as the 'find' shortcut! If you need professionally-designed phrases, this library will woo your players into your futuristic world.
'Mechanicals' by BOOM Library gets you all the sounds you need for an epic archaeological adventure with your robot sidekick. With clean, meticulously designed sounds, you'll have sounds for your machines, vaults, treasure chests, and more with rattling metal gears, heavy hinges, rolling chains, spinning washers, and small ratchets. You'll also receive sounds of clocks, typewriters, slots, bicycles, mechanical calculators... the list goes on! And of course, you can buy the Construction Kit or Designed Edition - or both for a great discount. For all your contraptions' audible workings, check this one out.
'Strange Moods' by Sounds Like George might be his strangest library yet, and that's saying something! This library has all the elements you need in its 65 minutes of content to take your audience on an odd yet intriguing trip, visiting otherworldly species and worlds with insane ambiences and bizarre loops. The library was inspired by games like 'Limbo', 'No Man's Sky' and 'Badlands', so that should give you some idea of what to expect. This is definitely one you just need to hear for yourself, so check out the demo!
'WW2 Aircraft' by Mindful Audio features WWII aircraft from all views. Featuring the well-known Supermarine Spitfire, Grumman F8F Bearcat, Bucker Bu-131 Jungmann, North American P-51 Mustang, and Curtiss P-40 Warhawk, you'll have sounds of these aircrafts from outside perspectives as they start up, idle, rev, and take off, as well as on-board recordings, and ground recordings as they fly by for over an hour and a half of their roars! If you need authentic sounds of these classic symbols of The Second World War, this is your library.
If you read Filip Stefanowski's Recording Adventures piece about capturing the sounds of Nepal, you'd know that 'Tek Chok Ling Nunnery / Nepal' is something special. In this library you get a rare perspective of the nunnery with sounds of Buddhist prayers, singing bowls, choirs, instruments, and more. You'll also hear sounds of Kathmandu to include crowds around the stupa, as well as ambiences of wind chimes and changing weather. Whether you need sounds for a documentary or as peaceful ambience in your game, this one is worth listening to.
'SWAP_Digital Screams' by MatiasMacSD is a quick pack of experimentally designed screams. With almost 100 sounds on 18 files, you'll hear glitchy, morphed sounds that will add abstract tension and suffering to your soundscapes. It includes scenarios such as 'Plugged In', 'Power Off', 'Pain', and 'Movement' with plenty of variations to give your ambiences an oddly lifelike feel. If you're looking for inspiration for your next project, check this one out.
'Footsteps' by Blue Sugar Audio takes an everyday concept and puts a brilliant spin on it. With five different characters of all shapes and sizes, from the big bearded Bruno to little Pippa or barefoot Iggy, you'll easily find the footstep you're looking for. Each character provides walking, running, and sneaking steps on 5 surfaces including concrete, dirt, metal, and wood. It also includes a Kontakt library!
